When people think about preparing for a baby, they often focus on:

  • Setting up the nursery
  • Buying clothes and gear
  • Packing a hospital bag

Those things matter.

But one of the most meaningful ways to care for your baby happens long before labor begins.

It’s preparing for how you will feed your baby.

Breastfeeding is a relationship.
And like any relationship, it benefits from intention, support, and understanding.

Prenatal lactation support is one of the simplest ways to set yourself up for a smoother start.

Why Prenatal Support Matters

Many parents assume breastfeeding will come naturally.

Sometimes it does.

Often, it doesn’t, at least not without guidance.

Prenatal support gives you the opportunity to:

  • Learn how milk production actually works
  • Understand what “normal” early feeding looks like
  • Identify personal risk factors for supply challenges
  • Talk through birth preferences and how they impact feeding
  • Build a plan for early support

Instead of reacting to problems in exhaustion and overwhelm, you enter postpartum informed and prepared.

That preparation can change everything.

Small Knowledge, Big Impact

Knowing what to expect in the first few days after birth can prevent common spirals:

“I don’t think I’m making enough.”
“Why does feeding hurt?”
“Is my baby getting anything?”

Prenatal education gives context.

It helps you recognize what’s normal, what’s a red flag, and when to ask for help.

That clarity protects both milk supply and mental health.

A Valentine’s Reframe

Love is not about doing everything perfectly.

Love is about showing up with care.

Choosing prenatal lactation support is a form of love that says:

“I want to understand my baby.”
“I want support if things feel hard.”
“I don’t want to figure this out alone.”

That is powerful.

What a Prenatal Lactation Consult Looks Like

At Kentucky Breastfeeding Center, prenatal education consults are individualized and practical.

We cover:

  • Your health history and any risk factors
  • How breastfeeding works in simple terms
  • What to expect in the first days postpartum
  • Early signs something may need support
  • How and when to reach out after birth

Consults are available virtually or in-person and are $150. As of writing date (2/1/26) we accept Aetna, Cigna, and United commercial insurance for in-person support.

We intentionally limit availability to 6 spots per due date month so families receive timely support.
